Details: Executive summary
Mobile Broadband begins to gain momentum in Brunei
A small wealthy nation in South East Asia, with a population of a little over 400,000, telecommunications infrastructure and services throughout Brunei are of a generally high standard, bolstered by a high GDP per capita.
There are two mobile operators in the Brunei market. DSTCom dominates the market. Mobile subscriber penetration peaked in 2012. Since 2014 the market has begun to recover and continue on with its overall growth phase. Penetration has increased to 111% in 2016. Further slow market growth is predicted over the next few years to 2021.
Fixed line penetration has seen a strong downhill slide over the past five years, halving during that time. Fixed line penetration has fallen from 20% in 2011 to only 10% by 2016, as mobile broadband has taken over driver of growth in the telecoms access market. In particular, mobile has completely taken over fixed line access in the voice access market. This decline is predicted to continue over the next five years, especially as mobile broadband gains momentum in the fixed line market.
The penetration of internet users has increased moderately over the past five years. Household internet penetration has also increased moderately, reaching over 80% in 2016.
Fixed broadband penetration in Brunei has increased moderately over the past few years from a relatively low base of subscribers by international comparisons. Further moderate growth is predicted over the next five years to 2021. In 2016 TelBru launched its Nationwide WiFi service as part of a long term strategy to expand its reach into the wireless segment.
